"The Lady from Damascus" is about to end. Doyenne of Czech diplomacy in Syria helped save many allies.
More than once, her life was on the line, yet she is still working in the Czech Republic's uniform in one of the most complex destinations on the planet. According to the findings of Lidovky.cz, the ambassador to Syria, Eva Filipi, is now expected to leave her post in Damascus.
Her diplomatic skills have been praised by the Americans. They reduced their presence in Damascus after the attack on Ambassador Robert Ford in 2011. Subsequently, the Czechs began to play the role of a liaison officer or protector of American interests (the so-called protecting power). This concerns primarily consular issues that affect the fate of specific American citizens. The reason why the US chose the Czech Republic was described six years ago by former Ambassador Ford himself to Foreign Policy magazine. "Eva (Filipi) had a better insight into the mindset of the Syrian government," he recalled.
Diplomacy did not want to comment on the exchange. "The process of appointing ambassadors is conducted in a classified mode and we cannot comment on the details," said Daniel Drake, a State Department spokesman. He added that the Czech embassy in Damascus would continue to act as a "protecting power".

He announced five years ago this month that he would step up his attacks on its finances and activities and see where it took him. On Jan. 8 of this year he explained in detail how contracts with outside production companies at ČT are used to steal money. Many in the media who still make fun of Soukup have a past or current connection to the money pipeline. P.S. Corruption is present in the country at all levels of government. It would be abnormal and unnatural for there to be none in the publicly owned Czech Television. There is a very lucrative "breeding ground" for it to influence the thinking and behaviour of the population by those for whom the interests of the country and its population are not paramount, even though they constantly talk about it. That is why politicians are so protective of it. I haven't met a citizen who is enthusiastic about CT? I wonder who pays for the surveys that show that citizens are enthusiastic about CT's programming? "The programme is the old programme", comes the frequent answer, or in new packaging. JŠ

A source told The Epoch Times that the wife of businessman Pavel Burán, whose court case was included in a book called Crimes Without Guns II (suicide is being considered), died over the weekend "as a result of a gunshot wound." This book was to be presented last week at an expert seminar on the state of Czech justice in the Chamber of Deputies. However, before the start of the seminar, the book was banned by a preliminary injunction (pdf) by the judicial panel of the Municipal Court in Brno, headed by Judge Ondřej Sekvard, Ph.D.
This is the first ban on the publication of the book since the fall of the communist regime in the former Czechoslovakia. The last book banned was Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler, which is now publicly available (source). According to the organizers of the seminar, the reason for the banning of Crimes Without Weapons II was the chapter devoted to the case of Pavel Burán. Full article>

"Find the limit of work", writes Minister Lipavsky to diplomats...
In five months, the Foreign Ministry has been rocked by three sudden and untimely deaths of high-ranking Czech diplomats - "on duty" and in high-profile destinations. The office is considering a new regulation of working conditions under the Foreign Service Act. Access to psychological care for diplomats and their families is also to be improved.

As a side note, the diplomat Jana Hybášková was caught drunk driving - and promoted. Germany will close its last three nuclear power plants tomorrow. This is how we saw the situation 12 years ago: we too will pay the German "no" to nuclear.
For a very small group of Czechs, Germany's decision to pull out of nuclear power by the end of 2022 might be good news, but for everyone else it's another blow to the pocketbook. It will mean not only higher electricity rates for Czech households and businesses, but also tighter margins for local manufacturers dependent on German customers trying to offset their own higher production costs. Think of all the billions of euros that have been sunk into those German nuclear plants and the billions more that will be needed for decommissioning them! With so much wanton destruction of value, someone is going to have to pay big time. Czechs aren't so surprised if Aleš Hušák spends Kč 20bn on an arena worth Kč 2bn, but Europeans have come to expect more from the Germans. Regardless of the safety aspect, Germany's nuclear withdrawal is a letdown for a Europe in need of a model of fiscal responsibility.

The Czechs have unfortunately left behind the aftertaste of uncultured barbarians, all the worse because even the participants of the official government expedition cannot forgive themselves for drinking alcohol and excesses. "We will take measures to prevent a similar situation from happening again," says the Czech Ministry of Defence announced. So, a ban on drinking alcohol on all government planes, or on the uncontrolled drinking that goes on at hotels on the taxpayers' money?
