In "Read what came out in the Přítomnost" (13.12.2022) was also included an article from 16.5.1934, written by Edvard Maška „Open letter to Jan Bata“ (pp. 311-312).
Mr. Maška's core work was primarily "guides to life success and personal development". I do not know to what extent his books fulfilled their aim, i.e. to help society, but the work of the Bata brothers fulfilled his proclaimed aims to the full. Those who do their work properly have no time to criticize others. I don't understand why the management of Přítomnost (Presence) chose this article. For the unknowing, I remind below not to forget the big and to remember the small things and the people.
We need not dwell too much on what Bata offered his people. In the 1930s to 1940s. Bata was far ahead of all other companies in Czechoslovakia and Europe.
Bata provided:
- High wages 3X competitors in Europe
- Low cost housing (probably around 10% of income) Who does that?
- Nearly free education
- Low cost shopping at Bata stores
- Health insurance
- Life insurance
- Disability insurance (I think they received that too)
- Bata gave workers a bank account (with a valuable balance) when a baby was born
- Bata withheld 10% of earned income for the entire time a worker was with the company (and gave them 4% annual interest)
- Bata may even have included a free or very low cost meals for employees
- Bata built everything his people needed
Bata developed:
- The Bata film studios producing all kinds of films
- The huge theatre in Zlin for movies
- The giant swimming pool in Zlin for all to use
- Teaching employees to be pilots, both men and women
- Disability insurance
- Giving employees a bank account (with a valuable balance) when a child was born.
- Charged 10% of earned income for as long as the worker was with the company (and gave 4% interest per year)
- Even provided free or very cheap meals for employees
- He built everything his people needed
- Training employees, both men and women, to be pilots
- Production of airplanes
There are many more examples of the improvements Bata made in Zlín and other Bata communities. If you look at what Bata provided for his employees, you will see that work at Bata was much better than anywhere else. The question of why others did not follow him and why many criticized him, let everyone answer for themselves. My dad used to say, "We criticize everyone and everything, but how many of us do our jobs properly?"
The Bata Principle remains the best guide to solving the problems of man and the world - he knew how to use his nature to benefit not only the individual, but also the company, the city, the region, the country and society. Only the violent death of founder Tomáš Bata (he was about to run for president of the republic), the rise of the communists to power, and the unfair practices of Western business competitors gradually led to the company's demise.
Bata was liquidated by the communists and his descendants. To this day, the property has not been returned to the descendants of the founders, nor has proper financial compensation been paid. This crime against our great patriots continues, thanks to the failure to deal with the crimes of communism after 1989. Totalitarianism has been replaced by democratisation directed by its gravediggers.
