Citát dne

Karel Havlíček Borovský

OTTAWA - A monument commemorating victims of communism will be erected near Parliament Hill.

A group called Tribute to Liberty will receive up to $1.5 million from the federal government to build a memorial on the lawn between the Library and Archives building and the Supreme Court. Conservative cabinet ministers Jason Kenney and Chris Alexander made the announcement Friday at the site of the planned memorial. It's expected the memorial will be finished late next year. "This will be a place of common memory," Kenney said.

Mandela srp a kladivoPresident Barack Obama has compared him to George Washington. MSNBC’s Chris Matthews heralded him as “perhaps the world’s greatest hero.” The Las Vegas Guardian Express dispensed with the “perhaps,” declaring in headline: “Nelson Mandela World’s Greatest Hero.” Others have christened him “the greatest man of the 20th century.” Many revere him as “the savior” of South Africa. School children worldwide read books, write essays and sing songs about him, and watch movies extolling his virtues and heroic accomplishments.

As we write, the 94-year-old Mandela has been hovering near death for days, the subject of hourly news updates and the beneficiary of tearful prayer vigils worldwide. With the announcement of his death, the eulogies will soon be sounding and in his honor innumerable streets, highways, schools, stadiums, parks, and public buildings will be renamed.

Sommerova_China_MIDA06.14.2013 China, Shanghai: Czech Republic director Olga Sommerova (left) poses with documentary jury chairman Yves Jeanneau after she won the award for Best Documentary yesterday.

The Magnolia International Documentary Awards announced the winners of both the competition and 2013 MIDA Filmmaker Plan yesterday.

The award for Best Documentary 60 minutes and up went to “Vera 68,” directed by Olga Sommerova from the Czech Republic.

The biographic documentary is about Vera Caslavska, a gymnast in 1960s who won seven gold and four silver Olympic Medals in Tokyo (1964) and Mexico City (1968).

“I’m honored with my film about the most famous Czechoslovak gymnast Vera Caslavska, a gymnast who has ‘superpower,’” Sommerova said yesterday.

Ilan Pappé / Mojmír Kallus   -   start discussion - Ilan Pappé is a professor of History and Political Science teaching at the University of Exeter in Great Britain, and a director of European Center for the Palestinian Studies. A christian Zionist Kallus and a Jewish anti-Zionist Pappé will discuss moral and historical issues connected to the creation and existance of the Israeli state. This will also include a question of democracy in the Jewish state, which Ilan Pappe sees as an oxymoron. Our guests will examine the past and possible future.
