Rudník, East Bohemia, April 24 (ČTK) — Czech detectives are investigating the case of newly exhumed skeletons in Rudník as a suspected multiple murder, regional police spokeswoman Ivana Ježková told ČTK today about the remains that seem to belong to Germans shot dead shortly after the end of World War II.
The perpetrator of the crime is unknown, she said.
The police and archaeologists have uncovered the remains of three people and they continue with the search. Ježková said the remains were found in the centre of the village of Rudník on a spot where ethnic German civilians living in Rudník had been executed and buried in June 1945 according to some historical sources. The remains will be sent to anthropologists to be examined, she said.
Rudník Mayor Aleš Maloch told ČTK that German chronicles say the Germans were shot dead because they were allegedly hiding weapons, which was not allowed after the war. The local authorities decided to exhume the remains as they plan to build a new sports area in the place in the next years. A demolition of an old gym building is underway. Maloch said the dead people deserve to be buried. If their identity is revealed, the Czechs will try to contact their relatives, he added.
Rudník chronicler Olga Hájková said five local Germans had been executed by the army after they had been sentenced to death according to Czech documents. According to German sources, the execution was done by partisans, she said. Hájková said there is no eye witness of the event in Rudník, but only people who saw the graves already covered. She said all then inhabitants of Rudník and nearby Javorník aged over 14 were called to watch the sentence and execution of the Germans who had to dig their own grave and were shot dead, each of them by five bullets. Other ethnic Germans had to cover the grave, she said.
