WATERLOO REGION — History Channel Canada was in Waterloo Region this week filming for an episode of a television series called Hardcore Heroes. The series profiles people who have done extraordinary things and will air on History Channel Canada and Discovery Channel's Military Channel in 2014.
Filming locations included a farm in Plattsville, the Waterloo Central Railway and the William Street pumping station. The crew was drawn here by the Waterloo Central Railway — a perfect fit for an episode about Czechoslovakian brothers Josef and Ctirad Masin. In the 1950s, the brothers decided they would make a daring escape from communist rule in the country to a U.S. army camp in West Berlin, then return to liberate their people. They were inspired by their father, who was executed by Nazis during the Second World War. Much of their journey was by train. The brothers Masin eventually achieved their goal of reaching the Americas, though they lost two companions along the way. Both eventually settled in the U.S. and served in the army. Czech opinion is split on the brothers. Some see them as murderers, while others see them as heroes.
